Behind Convent Walls (1978) is an Italian erotic drama film directed by Walerian Borowczyk, originally titled Interno di un convento. The story takes place inside a secluded convent where a group of young nuns struggle under the strict religious rules imposed by the ambitious abbess and a zealous priest who serves as their confessor. Many of the women have been forced into convent life against their wishes, leading to emotional conflicts, forbidden relationships and secret desires that challenge the institution's strict traditions. As the religious authorities attempt to maintain discipline and suppress the nuns' rebellious behavior, hidden affairs and scandalous secrets begin to emerge within the convent walls. The situation takes a tragic turn when a troubled novice poisons herself and several other young women, creating a serious scandal that the church authorities desperately attempt to conceal. The film explores themes of repression, forbidden desire, religious hypocrisy and the struggle between personal freedom and strict institutional control.
