Nick Walker, a Boston police officer, is killed in the line of duty after discovering that his corrupt partner Bobby Hayes is involved in a dangerous criminal operation. Instead of moving on to the afterlife, Nick is recruited into the Rest in Peace Department (R.I.P.D.), a supernatural police force that protects the living world from dead souls who refuse to move on. Assigned to work with the experienced and mysterious Roy Pulsipher, a former Wild West lawman, Nick is given a new identity and sent back to Earth to hunt down dangerous "Deados" hiding among ordinary people. As Nick investigates the strange supernatural activity, he discovers that his former partner is connected to a much larger conspiracy involving stolen gold and a powerful supernatural plan that could unleash chaos on Earth. Nick and Roy must put aside their differences and work together to stop the Deados and prevent the boundary between the living and the dead from collapsing.
